This week in Valparaiso, members of Ironworkers local 395, USW Local 1066 and USW Local 9231 went door to door to union members' houses, spreading the word on Senator Barack Obama, Jill Long Thompson, and candidate for the Indiana state senate, Larry Balmer!
Members of the group like Jeff Chidester, Financial Secretary of Ironworkers Local 395, gathered around the back of a pickup truck to distribute walk packets and discuss the game plan for the day! As the group paired up and got ready to head out, Brother Chidester explained the importance of getting out and spreading the word to union members,
"We're walking because these candidates stand strong with the union movement, and working Hoosiers. We need to let our members know who the good guys and the bad guys are when it comes to their pocketbooks. And when they receive the necessary information, we'll see the difference in November- but more importantly we'll see the difference after November."
First-time walker, Mike Piazzo (Ironworkers Local 395), was excited to participate and says he plans to keep walking up until the election,
"We had a really good experience. We visited homes of members from AFT, Ironworkers, Painters, and many more unions, and we had friendly receptions from everyone. Having a connection through the union really made things easy. And with union members walking for these candidates across the state, we are going to have a huge impact this election."
Paul Raush (USW Local 9231), who facilitated the labor walk, is scheduling walks throughout North West Indiana up until the election and says, "We're hosting labor walks, phone banks, we're sending local union mail- we're making sure our members have every opportunity to get the information they need to protect their jobs and their livelihoods in November!"
