Bill O’Neill is our endorsed candidate for the NM House of Representatives in District 15. He currently serves as the Executive Director of the New Mexico Juvenile Parole Board working with the rehabilitation and reintegration of high risk youth.
Not surprisingly, Bill’s number one issue is the state of the public school system in New Mexico. As a small-town student from public schools who attended Cornell University, he knows how to play “catch-up” at prestigious universities and he wants New Mexico students to be up to the challenge.
“We need to fund education in New Mexico fully,” says Bill. “Only 44% of high school freshman in New Mexico graduate. That is outrageous.” Bill O’Neill supported the House Bill 241, which would provide much needed funding to public schools through taxes on out-of-state corporations like Walmart who pay no taxes in New Mexico. “My opponent opposed this legislation,” says Bill. “She portrayed it as though it were fiscally irresponsible to fund our public schools.”
In addition to education, Bill is running on ethics reform in Santa Fe, health care and public safety. “A lot of politicians talk about reducing crime,” says Bill. “I have worked with juvenile and adult offenders for 18 years, and I will put my expertise to work in Santa Fe.”
Working with the families of incarcerated juveniles for nearly two decades, Bill is very in touch with the needs of working families, and he pledges to support working families and unions once he is in office.
“I will support PLA agreements and collective bargaining rights when I am elected,” says Bill.
This coming week Labor 2008 is conducting labor walks on Bill O’Neill’s behalf. We know he will support our issues once elected and we will do all we can to see that he is.
Good luck Bill O’Neill!
